Yogyakarta is an Indonesian province that is situated on the island of Java. Yogyakarta has the distinction of being the only province that is governed by the Sultanate of Ngayogyakarta Hadiningrat. Yogyakarta is surrounded by the Indian Ocean and is spread over a total land area of 3,185.80 km². A province that is rich in cultural and historical heritage, Yogyakarta was home to the Mataram Dynasty from 1575 to 1640. Among the many things to see in this province, there are many temples, which are over 1000 years old like the Borobudur temple constructed in the 9th century by Syailendra dynasty.
Apart from the historical monuments, Yogyakarta has much to offer in terms of beautiful and stunning natural surroundings. A land that is dotted with green rice fields, it is completely overshadowed by the towering Merapi Mountain. There are some natural white sandy beaches and is an ideal place for relaxation. Most locals travel around town by bikes and even horse carts. The people are warm and they always have a smile for everyone. One of the favorite tourist spots is the residence of the sultan known as Kraton Yogyakarta. Another must see place is the Sri Sultan Hamengkubuwono's palace also known as Kraton Ngayogyakarto.
Some of the other popular landmarks in the city include the Tugu Monument. This is located in the center of the downtown and was constructed by Sri Sultan Hamengkubuwono VI. The Benteng Vredeburg is one of the few Dutch forts in Indonesia and it is situated right across Gedung Agung or the President's Palace. The fort throws light on the Dutch colonial architecture.
