Surabaya was formerly known as Soerabaja and it is the 2nd largest city in Indonesia. It is also the capital of the province of East Java. It is situated on the northern coast of east Java close to the mouth of River Mas and the Madura Strait. Surabaya is one of the busiest ports in the country and exports tobacco, sugar and coffee to various parts of the world. One of the popular tourist spots in Surabaya is the Surabaya zoo, which was opened in 1916. It is famous the world over for being the first place in the world where Orangutans were successfully bred in captivity. The zoo is situated 3km away from the city and is near the Joyoboyo bus terminal.
Some of the good places that you can visit would include the Grand Mosque of Surabaya, which is also the largest mosque in the province of East Java. There is another mosque called the Cheng Ho Mosque, which highlights mostly Chinese architectural style. The Jales Veva Jaya Mahe Monument is dedicated to the Indonesian navy while the Mpu Tantular Museum showcases a huge collection of ancient and rare Javanese artifacts. If you have an interest in colonial architecture then Grahadi is the place to be. It is the residence of the colonial-era Governor of East Java. At Grahadi, you will get a glimpse of the popular Reog dance, which is a traditional dance.
