Sumbawa Island Hotels
Sumbawa Island is the biggest island of the Province of West Nusa Tenggara and is located east of Lombok and west of the Komodos and Flores. Sumbawa Island comprises of 4 areas: West Sumbawa with its capital at Taliwang, Sumbawa with its capital at Sumbawa Besar, Dompu with its capital at Dompu and Bima with its capital at Bima. Sumbawa Island is three times the size of Lombok and is a true nature paradise. The island stretches 300 kilometers and its width varies from 15 to 90 kilometers.
Sumbawa Island has a dominant Sulawesi influence, especially in architecture and the coastal population includes Bugis and Makassarese settlers. Recently an archaeological excavation team conducted excavation on Mount Tambora, Sumbawa’s volcano, and discovered an entire city buried 40 meters under volcanic ash. Mount Tambora erupted in 1815 and was recorded as the greatest eruption known in history. Once the highest volcano in Indonesia, Mount Tambora is now only 2,851 m and the cone holds a huge caldera. To reach the top, you will have to trek for three days through dense rain forest and savannah grasslands. The highlight is a boat trip to the island of Satonda consisting of the volcano (300 m) with a salt-water lake. The island is home to many exotic species of birds and sea turtles.
At Sumbawa, you will find isolated and pristine beaches with turquoise waters from Taliwang to Sekongkang. Most tourists in Sumbawa head to Bima to catch the glimpse of Komodo dragons while others enjoy the West Sumbawan experience.
