Sulawesi is situated between the Maluku Islands and Borneo. It is the 11th largest island in the world and has a land area of 174,600 km². The landscape is dominated by large peninsulas and they are the East Peninsula, the Semenanjung Minahassa peninsula, the South Peninsula and the South-east Peninsula. The landscape changes into a rugged mountainous region in the center of the island. The island of Sulawesi has abundant natural resources, flora and fauna. There are many different types of animals found on this Indonesian island and 127 of them are mammals. 62% of these mammals are endemic, which means that they are found nowhere else in the world or Indonesia. The largest mammal in Sulawesi is the dwarf buffalo also called the anoa locally.
