Medan Hotels
Medan is a popular coastal city and the capital of North Sumatran Province in Indonesia. Medan occupies 26,510 km² and is the third largest city along the northern part of Indonesia. The city borders Deli Serdang Regency to the east, south, and west, and the Strait of Malacca to the north. Considered to be a bustling city, Medan has the third highest concentration of population after Jakarta and Surabaya.
Medan has a mix of communities, reflecting its pre-independence and post-independence history. It is famous throughout Indonesia as the home of the Batak people, although the ancestral sites of these people are scattered throughout northern Sumatra. There is also a large ethnic Javanese community, mostly descendants of people shipped from Java in the last century.
Many tourists choose to use Medan as a quick “thru-point” to travel elsewhere in Sumatra but the city offers some great places like the Maimoon Palace, Vihara Borobudur (Buddhist Temple), Vihara Gunung Timur (Chinese Temple), Mesjid Raya Mosque, Kesawan Square, and Merdeka Walk (5 mins from Kesawan Square).
Merdeka walk is the hottest hangout place in town with cafes, restaurants, exhibitions, and entertainment at Lapangan Merdeka. The Kesawan Square is located along Ahmad Yani Street, just before Merdeka Walk and offers unique atmosphere for pleasure. It is open till 6pm everyday. The Maimun Palace or Maimoon Palace is a well-recognized landmark in Medan as well. The Kesultanan of Deli, Sultan Makmun Al Rasyid Perkasa Alamsyah built this huge palace with 30 rooms covering 2,772 sq meters in 1888.
