Makassar Hotels
Makassar is a port city set and the busiest out of the chain of islands known as Sulawesi. Formerly known as Ujung Pandang, Makassar is known as the gateway to Toraja Land.
Being the provincial capital of South Sulawesi islands, it has been an important port for trade since the early sixteenth century during the region of Gowa Kingdom. The Dutch were successful in occupying Makassar in 1667 after orchestrating a revolt by other neighbouring kingdoms. Staunchly independent, the native of South Sulawesi offered much resistance to Dutch occupation right up to 1930s.
The name of the city is also spelled as Macassar and is full of wonderful sights for the tourists. A largish, and sprawling and modern city Makassar has many of the popular areas at or near the waterfront. One of the most famous places to visit is the Fort Rotterdam. It is also rumoured to be the best preserved samples of Dutch Architecture in Indonesia. Built in 1667, the Fort is an amazing place to visit and the Museum Kota behind the fort is old but ill-maintained.
In the South of Makassar you will be able to see remains of ancient Gowa Kingdom. Some interesting things to see are the tomb of Sultan Hasanuddin, and towards the south is the ex-royal residence which has now been converted into the Ballalompoa Museum. Another place to see is the Benteng Somba Opu, the ruins of this Makassarese fort in the delta of Jeneberang River just about 7 kilometers from south Makassar is a fine example of the architecture in ancient days. Also visit the open air museum next to the fort.
