Located about 60 km south of Jakarta is the West Java city of Bogor. Once the capital of Indonesia under British rule with Stamford Raffles, Bogor was also the capital during the Dutch dry season and was known as Buitenzorg, which meant “beyond cares” back then.
When you travel from Jakarta to Bandung, Bogor lies on the main road over the Puncak pass. The city is surrounded by beautiful and lush green areas and during the colonial era, it was developed as a hub for plantations such as tea, coffee, rubber etc. Today it is surrounded by sprawling tea plantations along the south, a botanical garden in its heart, coffee plantations in Sukabumi and huge rubber plantations that are spread from Bogor to Citereup and Bukit Sentul.
Bogor has also been dubbed as the “Rain City” (Kota Hujan), an indicator to the fact that the city is perennially wet and it’s almost always raining here even during dry seasons. Perched almost 290 meters above sea level, the city is cool and many rich and famous have their holiday homes here. The deer park and Institue of Agriculture along with a presidential palace also suggest, to some extent, the popularity of Bogor.
Rapid development has snatched the charm of this once beautiful and pleasant city to some extent. Today’s Bogor’s is pretty much congested like any other city in Indonesia but the gurgling rivers, calm canals, red-roofed homes, churches, mosques, blooming flowers, lush trees and panoramic views of the Mount Salak add a touch of uniqueness and variety to this once glorious city!
