


Indonesia is situated in Southeast Asia and it comprises of 17,508 islands and hence it is called as the largest archipelagic state in the World. It has a population of approximately 200 million people spread over 1,919,440 sq km. The capital of Indonesia is Jakarta and it shares its borders with East Timor, Malaysia and Papua New Guinea. Out of the 17,508 islands in the Indonesian Archipelago, only 6000 of them are inhabited and these islands are scattered around the equator and hence you will find a variation in climate. There are five large islands and these are Sumatra, Java, Kalimantan, Sulawesi and New Guinea.
The Barito and the Mahakam Rivers are one of the largest in the country and are situated in the Kalimantan region. Since the islands are situated on the Eurasian, Australian and Pacific tectonic plates, it is prone to earthquakes, volcanic eruptions and the very recent Tsunami. There is plenty to see in Indonesia and the landscape varies from volcanic mountains to tropical rainforests and sea coast. There are almost 150 active volcanoes of which the most famous are the Tambora and Krakatoa volcano.
The climate of Indonesia is tropical and it has two seasons, the monsoon and the dry summer. The highest rainfall is recorded in the mountainous regions of Sulawesi, Kalimantan and west Java. Some of the popular spots in Indonesia include the island of Bali, beaches of Lombok, the Bohorok Orang-utan Viewing Centre, Borobudur, Gunung Kawi on a rock face, and Kelimutu volcano with its colored lakes.
